Greg
Robertson
Biography:
Greg Robertson was born in Albuquerque, NM,
and received a BFA in Technical Theatre and Design from Eastern New
Mexico
University. After stage management and design work in England, he came
to Santa
Fe and began his sculpting career. Using recycled slab granite, he
developed a
different approach to creating art that is not seen in traditional
stone
sculpture. Today, he builds custom installations, large outdoor
sculpture,
water sculpture and smaller intimite works.
In
2007, Mr. Robertson attended the Sax Stoneworking
Workshop with internationally recognized sculptor Kazitaka
Uchida, Joseph Kincannon, and Kelly
Jamison. He has
several public works in Albuquerque and Santa Fe, organized the Pecos,
NM Studio
Tour and has been published in "New
Mexico" magazine, "Santa Fean"
magazine, and "THE" magazine among others.
Artist
Statement:
Perhaps
one of the biggest issues I think
about, as a sculptor, is the importance of sculpture in todays world. I have
always made things out of
whatever I had; found materials, clay, wood.
I have
for years taken many photographs. I have built houses out of adobe and
built
theatre sets out of cloth and lighting. I constantly write songs and
play
music, and in the winter I intensely focus on strength and form,
carving a
beautiful line in fresh powder with my skis. These are all forms of
art,
personal expression with the intent of enjoyment either for myself
or others. Seeing the fruits of my labor is very satisfying, but is
there
something more that sculpture can add to the world? I hope that my work
can
someday be part of a bigger picture, perhaps representing a more
understanding
human mindset. There are many ways to accomplish this, from custom
installations with a specific message to using art as a fundraising
tool. Art,
really, is about an individuals
relationship with a
specific piece. For me the importance lies in creating something that
can
develop a relationship, either with an individual or many, many people.
